Common Management Practices

Common Management Practices:

Deworming - Deworm the pigs every 30-45 days until they weigh over 200 lb. The first worming, use 292 MoorMan’s ShowTec Starter WDC or 272 MoorMan’s ShowTec Starter/Grower WDC.

 Second, use *Safe Guard
ä  paste four days in a row. The third deworming, use *Ivomecä  one day. Then, as needed alternate dewormings between Safe Guardä  and Ivomec  so worms won’t develop a resistance to a particular dewormer. Please follow the label instructions for each of  these products.

Self-feeders and waterers - If you are using a self-feeder, elevate the feeder with concrete blocks so the pig is not eating at ground level. Pigs need to be eating straightforward. You also need to keep the water nipples at the eye level of the pig. Keep elevating both feeder and waterers as the pig grows. When you start hand feeding the pig, hang the feeder on the fence and keep it elevated.

Medication

Contact your local veterinarian or MoorMan’s ShowTec Swine Specialist.

Hair and Skin Care

  • White pigs need to be washed weekly and kept out of the sun.  DO NOT PUT OIL ON WHITE HOGS. Thirty days from show time wash daily.

  • Dark pigs need to be washed weekly. Keep oil or conditioner on their skin to prevent drying and cracking.

BRUSH YOUR PIGS DAILY WITH A COARSE BRUSH IN THE SAME DIRECTION THE HAIR GROWS.

Exercise

You need to let your pig walk frequently to discipline and gain control of the pig and teach it not to run. This exercise area needs to be a wide, open dirt space to simulate a show ring. It will take time to train your pig to walk, do not run with it. Try to get in front of your pig to turn it before it runs. Thirty days before show time, you need to walk your pig daily.

Show Preparation

Clipping instructions - Wait until two or three days prior to the show or sale before clipping the pig. A fresh haircut always looks best. Clip the pig’s face, underneath the neck, and the belly with a #00 guard and on the rest of the body use a #1 guard. Clip the tail with a #00 all the way to the end. When you finish, try to blend all of the different lengths of hair together.

Feeding Instructions at the show - Keep feeding normal rations if the pig looks fresh and is at desired show weight levels.

Be sure you monitor feed and water intake to adhere to ten-pound weigh-back rules in most market pig shows.

Water contributes to the largest percentage of muscle tissue weight. Thus, water quantity and frequency are critical to achieve normal fill.
