OptiBalance in the Making
Nearly 30 years ago, ADM Alliance Nutrition^® research scientists experimented with improving protein utilization efficiency in dairy cows.  In 1979, the result was ADM’s first patented protein technology – ProTek.  Since then, several ADM patented protein technologies, including AminoTek^®, EBT, and UltraBalance^®, have been successfully utilized in the dairy industry.

The Technology
OptiBalance technology has an affect on protein degradation and starch fermentation in the rumen.  Microbial degradation of protein is reduced in the rumen, increasing the amount of amino acids available for absorption in the small intestine.  More starch digestion is shifted to the small intestine with OptiBalance, making energy utilization more efficient.  The increased availability and supply of amino acids and energy in the small intestine provides more nutrients for milk production.  This more efficient utilization of dietary protein and energy sources results in greater yield of milk and milk components per pound of feed consumed.

 

Research Results
Research trials show OptiBalance improves efficiency of dietary protein and energy use, enabling greater economy of production through increased production of milk and milk components.  The average milk production response to OptiBalance was an increase of at least 5% over control animals across several research studies.  This response was consistent with a Purdue University trial (see graph) in which treated cows also had an improvement in milk fat over control animals of 0.24%.  The Purdue trial diets contained an appreciable amount of distillers grains, a feed ingredient becoming increasingly common in dairy rations.

Putting OptiBalance to Work
OptiBalance is available through ADM Alliance Nutrition’s Resolution program which provides farm-specific formulation to complement a producer’s forage and commodity base.  It can also be obtained in product form – OptiBalance Pak – designed to be fed at 0.4-0.6 lb per head daily, with usage dependent upon the amount of rumen degradable protein in the diet.
