Criteria for Selecting Free-Choice Supplements

A profitable free-choice range supplement program not only depends upon the nutritional adequacy of the supplement, but also on the successful delivery of nutrients to cattle and resulting benefits. A supplement should be based on nutrient needs (stage of cow production) and forage quality. Producer preference will dictate type of supplement (blocks, tubs, cubes, etc.). Consider the following guidelines in selecting a free-choice range supplement for cattle:

  • Supplies proper nutrient content – Meets rumen and animal needs; supplements nutrients available to cattle grazing forages rather than substitutes for nutrients already present in forage.

  • Provides intake control – Prevents costly, inefficient overconsumption of supplement and enables product to be fed on a periodic basis.

  • Weather resistant – Reduces wind and rain losses.

  • Economical –Based on animal unit per season consumption rate and benefits derived from use.

  • Easy to feed – Reduces labor and time spent feeding.
