The Cost
Effective Way to Utilize Forages
The grain and forage grown by American farmers and livestock
producers is the finest feed produced in the world. But, in these
feeds, there is more meat and milk than livestock can extract
without special nutritional help. Since 1885, we have been
providing the highest quality nutritional products, services, and
on-site guidance to livestock producers, helping them achieve the
greatest possible return from the grain and forage they utilize in
livestock production.
What is
Roughage Buster?
Roughage Buster is a supplement designed to provide crude protein,
Alliance Nutrition¹s scientifically formulated base and trace
minerals plus vitamins A, D, and E to cattle on pasture or
high-roughage rations. The crude protein is primarily supplied by
Alliance Nutrition¹s exclusive product biuret, a non-protein
nitrogen source, which is gradually released in the rumen. The
vitamins and minerals in Roughage Buster are protected from
weather elements through utilization of the patented WeatherMaster®
weatherization process. Roughage Buster is available in 33.3 lb
blocks or 50 lb bag loose WeatherMaster® processed
formulations.
Why Use
Biuret?
Protein is one of the most expensive nutrients to supplement in
the diet. Protein from non-protein nitrogen (NPN) is relatively
inexpensive, but the most common source of NPN, urea, is released
too rapidly in the rumen, as shown in the chart, to be well
utilized in high-roughage diets. This rapid release can cause
ammonia toxicity in some instances.
Due to biuret¹s unique chemical properties, biuret is released
more gradually in the rumen compared to urea. Research shows
biuret has a nitrogen release curve similar to that of soybean
meal. Biuret provides a more cost-effective protein source than
urea and a higher level of safety against ammonia toxicity.
Why Use Roughage Buster?
Forages peak in protein during the spring and start declining in
the summer. These forages generally will not meet the total
protein requirements of cattle as the protein level in the forages
declines. If the protein needs of the animal are not met, the
rumen will not function correctly in breaking down the forages
digested by the animal, which can lead to reduced forage intake,
reduced forage digestibility, and overall lower cattle
performance. Protein supplementation from Roughage Buster during
this period will fulfill protein requirements and enhance
performance cost effectively.
When to Use
Roughage Buster

Use Roughage Buster when forage protein levels are inadequate to
meet the needs of your cattle.
Why Does
Roughage Buster have Different Protein Levels?
Roughage Buster has been formulated to provide approximately 0.3
lb of protein per head per day at the mid-range consumption
target. Differences in forage quality and quantity make it
necessary to have different products to achieve this target level.
This chart gives a general guideline of when to use the different
Roughage Buster products:

Roughage Buster: Recommended Feeding
Guidelines
Feed Roughage Buster free-choice to cattle on pasture or roughage
rations. Make sure animals have adequate clean fresh water,
pasture or roughage available, and are not starved for salt or
minerals. Remove other sources of salt and minerals, and feed
Roughage Buster continuously in bunks, boxes, or feeders. It is
desirable to feed this product in covered feeders to minimize
waste from heavy rains. Recommended consumption of Roughage Buster
will vary according to the formulation of which Roughage Buster
products are used. Provide at least one feeding location for this
product for each 15 to 20 animals. Consumption of Roughage Buster
will vary according to the weight of the animal and the quality
and quantity of available forage. If consumption is too high, feed
additional salt or mineral, or move Roughage Buster farther away
from water sources or loafing areas. If consumption is too low,
move Roughage Buster closer to the water source or loafing areas.
If satisfactory consumption levels can still not be achieved, you
may consider switching to another Alliance Nutrition supplement to
gain consumption closer to target levels desired. In some cases,
consumption higher or lower than normal levels may be adequate,
based on the nutrient content of the forages being fed. Test your
forages to determine the actual needs of your animals. All
consumption figures stated here are approximate. Consult product
label sheet for additional feeding instructions.
Warning: This feed should be used only in
accordance with the instructions furnished on the label.
