What is LiquaPro?
LiquaPro is a liquid feed line based on molasses and quality ADM
liquid co-products to offer an economical means of meeting
producer's varying supplement needs for cattle on range or
pasture. Several types of products are available:
-
Range Supplements - Formulated to
meet the varied nutritional needs of cattle grazing or consuming
forage.
-
Ration Conditioners - Economical way
to improve ration palatability and to reduce dustiness and
fines.
-
Feedlot Suspensions - Complete
supplement package designed for growing and finishing cattle.
-
Mill blends/Simple blends - Designed
for use with texturized feed and commodity blends.
Why use a liquid range supplement?
LiquaPro liquid feed offers an easy, economical way to supplement
cows when forage quality is poor. Supplementing cows will improve
forage digestibility, intake, and energy utilization to optimize
animal performance.
Why provide a protein supplement; isn't pasture good enough?
Typically, cow protein requirements can only be fully satisfied
when forage quality is high. Forage protein levels fluctuate
greatly during the grazing season and are usually only adequate
60-90 days during the year. To maintain optimum cow body
condition, supplemental protein should be offered. Supplemental
crude protein will improve forage digestibility, dry matter
intake, and energy efficiency.
When should range supplements be fed?
To obtain optimum performance, range supplements should be
available year-round or at least when forage quality declines and
can no longer meet the animal's requirements.
How are liquid range supplements fed?
LiquaPro range supplements are designed to be fed free-choice in
a lick tank feeder. Liquid feeders enable free-choice access to
supplements at all times. This allows less aggressive animals
ample opportunity to obtain supplemental nutrients.
How should LiquaPro range supplements be used in a feeding
program?
The optimum method of feeding LiquaPro range supplements is to
use lick tanks year-round on a free-choice basis or at least when
the available forage cannot meet the cow's protein requirements.
Protein supplementation will improve forage digestibility, intake,
and energy utilization, which improve animal performance.
How much range supplement will cows consume?
Consumption will vary according to cow type, stage of production,
age, and body condition of the animal, and the quality and
quantity of feedstuffs available. As forage quality declines, the
cow will increase consumption of supplement to meet requirements.
Expect an average consumption of 1-3 lb/head/day.
Should other supplements, such as mineral or salt, continue to
be fed while
feeding liquid supplement?
Absolutely! To ensure the cow's mineral and salt requirements are
met, salt and mineral should be provided free-choice to cattle
year-round in addition to feeding liquid supplement.
To achieve proper consumption of liquid supplements, where
should
lick tank feeders be placed?
To avoid overconsumption, lick tanks should be handled the same as
mineral feeders. Place tanks at least 100-200 yards from a water
source. Do not place them directly in high traffic areas or where
cows congregate, such as shady areas and behind windbreaks.
Extremely easy access may cause overconsumption of supplement.
Provide free-choice mineral to ensure proper nutrition and to
control intake of liquid supplement.
What might limit a cow's consumption of liquid supplement?
Cows will try to meet their nutrient needs by eating the feed that
is available. If cows have quality forage or other feedstuffs and
are in proper body condition, they will usually eat less
supplement. In addition, proper placement of lick tank feeders in
the pasture and providing free-choice mineral is necessary to help
control consumption of liquid supplement. Special ingredients that
are designed to limit intake can be included in the range
supplement to control the amount consumed if necessary.
Does LiquaPro contain non-protein nitrogen (NPN) sources such
as urea?
LiquaPro offers a balanced blend of protein from natural and
other sources, including urea. This balance extends the nitrogen
availability to the rumen microorganisms, which will increase the
digestibility of roughage, allowing the cattle to eat more and
obtain more nutrition from the feed consumed.
Will the urea in LiquaPro liquid supplement harm cows?
The level of urea in LiquaPro liquid feeds is not high enough
to be harmful when fed according to directions and at the
recommended rate. Cattle that are starved or on very poor forage
should be gradually introduced to any urea-based product to allow
the rumen microbial population to adjust.
Can LiquaPro range supplements be fed to other animals such as
horses?
Feed supplements containing non-protein nitrogen or urea sources
are not cleared for feeding to non-ruminant animals.
Can LiquaPro range supplements be used for dairy cattle?
Yes. LiquaPro range supplements can be used for dairy cattle and
may be most effective for grazing herds and growing heifers.
What does improving cows' plane of nutrition mean to a
producer's bottom line?
Proper nutrition affects several factors that contribute to
overall beef management program.
-
Body condition score (BCS) - Proper
body condition should be maintained throughout the year for
optimum reproductive performance. A body condition score of 5-6
will increase conception rate, reduce length of breeding season,
and increase calf-weaning weight.
-
Calf weaning weight - A heavier calf
at weaning means more total pounds sold
-
Lower cow cull rates
What is the molasses base in LiquaPro liquid feeds?
LiquaPro liquid feeds utilize a variety of quality ingredients to
economically formulate the best products. LiquaPro feeds contain
one or several types of molasses, which may include but are not
limited to cane, soy, and beet sources.
What should producers expect when introducing cows to liquid
range supplement
for the first time?
Often cows first introduced to liquid supplement will eat more
than the target consumption rate for the first few days. After
they get accustomed to the product, intake should level out to the
target consumption rate. It may be necessary to physically limit
feed intake for the first few days to get the animals adjusted to
the liquid supplement.
What should be done when cows are eating too much liquid
supplement?
First, ensure tanks are properly placed in relation to water,
mineral feeders, and cow loafing areas. If feeders are properly
placed, then one or more of the wheels can be tied to prevent
turning. If necessary, unpalatable ingredients can be added to
further limit consumption.
How many animals does one lick tank feeder feed?
Twenty-five animals per wheel is the recommended feeding rate.
Therefore, the number of tanks needed depends on the number of
wheels on the tank. Tanks come in different sizes with number of
wheels ranging between two and four.
How often should lick tanks be cleaned out?
Because some settling occurs with all liquid products, lick tanks
should be cleaned out at least once a year, preferably prior to
the start of a new feeding season.
