Benefits of
Protein Supplementation
Forage quality and quantity may not always be adequate to meet the
animal’s nutrient requirements to support the desired level of
production. Under such conditions, as in wintering cattle on
dormant range, proper supplementation can provide needed nutrients
to the animal, thereby increasing forage intake and utilization.
Protein, namely degradable intake protein (DIP), is usually the
first-limiting nutrient of low-quality forages. Intake and
digestibility of low-quality forage increases when cattle are
supplemented with DIP.

Digestibility

Improvements in intake and
digestibility of forage can result in significant improvements in
body condition score and body weight during winter. Work at Kansas
State University, University of Nebraska, and Montana State
University shows cattle supplemented with DIP maintained or
minimized the loss of body weight and condition score when grazing
dormant range.
