Salt and Minerals
by Judy Reynolds, PhD., P.A.S.

Research has shown that horses have the ability to eat about the correct amount of salt, if it is readily available. However, they don't have regulatory mechanisms that trigger their appetite for other individual minerals they need. And, since minerals interact with each other in the body, it is important to provide the correct balance of minerals.

Minerals can be added to concentrate feeds, top-dressed over feeds or provided free choice in granular or block form. The problem with relying on minerals added to concentrate feeds is that people feed different amounts of concentrates to their horses. A feed can only be formulated with one concentration of minerals.

With some people feeding 2 pounds and some feeding 6 pounds of the same feed, it’s best to use a top-dressed or block mineral product. This ensures your horse's mineral needs are met, even when his energy and protein needs change.

Salt blocks and trace-mineral blocks, the red-colored ones, provide salt, but not any other major minerals like calcium, phosphorus or magnesium, and not the right amounts of trace minerals, like copper, zinc and selenium for horses.

In contrast, MoorMan’s GROSTRONG Minerals are formulated specifically for horses.
They contain 27 vitamins, minerals and electrolytes in ratios that best complement forages.
They can be top dressed or fed free choice in granular, block or QuadBLOCK
® form.

The unique QuadBLOCKs easily break into 4 smaller blocks for individual stall feeding. They give you the convenience of small blocks at a large block price!
