"Traditional” Horse Feeding Practices Are
Being Challenged

It is ironic that, as we enter the new millennium, the way we feed
horses is dramatically changing. In the early 1900s horses were
first routinely fed cereal grains to provide additional energy for
work. And, that was also the beginning of an era of metabolic and
digestive disorders such as colic, founder, tying-up, etc. in
horses. It is true that today’s elite athletes need very
specialized rations with all of the nutrients in the correct
proportions if they are to perform at their best..............
Feeding Fats and Oils to Horses
by Judith A. Reynolds, Ph.D., P.A.S. Divisional Equine
Technical Specialist ADM Alliance Nutrition, Inc. ........the most
important functions of fat in horse diets are to increase energy
density of the diet and lessen the risk of colic, founder, gastric
ulcers, and exertional myopathies (tying-up) induced by
high-starch rations..........
Adding
Fat ....... Feeding Fat-Supplemented Diets to Horses

Enhancing horse productivity and well-being has drawn
considerable interest in feeding fat-supplemented diets to horses.
Much of this interest has been prompted by a significant amount of
research on the subject over the last ten years. While several
unknown aspects of specific fatty acid nutrition in the horse
still exists, the caloric and some extra-caloric effects of
feeding fat to horses are well documented.
Using Rice Bran in Horse Rations The benefits of fat in horse rations
are well understood. So, attention is now focusing on different
sources of fat. Over the past few years, you may have seen
references to rice bran as a fat source in popular press articles.
......
Fats and Oils as Concentrated Energy
Sources. The type and amount of grass and hay
should be selected to provide as much of a horse's energy
requirement as possible. But, when forage alone will not meet
energy needs, fats and/or grains should be fed.

Fat Sources for Horses
Fats are used to
increase the caloric density of horse rations without as much risk
of metabolic disorders caused by fermentation of starch from
grains. Now that fats are widely accepted as energy sources for
horses, the new focus is on comparison of available fat
sources...................
What is Rice Bran?
by Rukmini Cheruvanky, Ph.D., FACN
Rice bran is a rich source of hypoallergenic protein,
oil, dietary fiber, and nutrients essential to life. Rice bran is unique
in the plant kingdom. It is the only major cereal that contains all of
the essential amino acids, the necessary building blocks of all protein
in the body..................
Stabilized Rice Bran as a Horse
Feed
is stabilized with
a proprietary “non-chemical” extrusion technology that selectively
inactivates the lipase enzyme while preserving all of the
nutrients....
